It is always important to make sure your solution to a problem is correct. That is what is meant when teachers say "check your work." Now you can check yourself or exchange with someone else to have him/her check it.

Example 1:

If b =4, evaluate for each expression below:
(5+b)x3
4+7b-2
10x(b-2)

 Verify
Each step along the way,  You should ask yourself, "Is this correct?"
Remember your "Order of Operations"

Expression
#1

Step 1:  Sub in constant for the variable. (5+4)x3

Step 2: Do work inside parentheses.         (5+4)x3

Step 3: Then multiply                                9x3

Step 4:
Solution:                                         27

Expression
#2

Step 1: Sub in constant for the variable.    4+7(4)-2

Step 2: Then multiply.                               4+7x4-2

Step 3: Add.                                               4+28-2

Step 4: Subtract.                                        32-2

Step 5:
Solution:                                         30

Expression
#3

Step 1: Sub in constant for the variable.     10x(4-2)

Step 2: Do work inside parentheses.            10x4-2

Step 3: Multiply.                                          10x2

Step 4: Solution.                                            20

Example 2:

Write an equation to find out how many golf balls Ed has, then solve. Ed and Rachael have 21 golf balls. Rachael has 8 golf balls. How many golf balls does Ed have?

Equation

Step 1: We know the sum of the golf balls is 21.  r+e=21

Step 2: We know Rachael has 8 golf balls. So 8 is an addend.         8+e=21

Step 3: 8+e=21 is the equation

Solution

Step 1: 8+e=21 Solve by using the inverse operation

Step 2: 8+e=21
          -8      -8
               e=13

Step 3:
The solution is e=13

Verify

Step 1: Put 13 in place of the "e."

Step 2: 8+13=21 Eight plus thirteen does equal twenty-one
