Circle Graph PictureA circle graph presents the division of a total amount of data.   It uses the area of a circle to show how a whole is divided into fractional parts.

Circle Graph

A circle graph is used to show the parts of a whole.
When making a circle graph it is important to make sure that the size you make each piece is accurate to the number.
For example you do not want to make your piece that is 2, bigger than your piece that is 5.

Circle Graph of Favorite Videotapes of Miss. Carroll's Class
Remember the greater the value of the data, the wider the wedge that represents the value.

By looking at this circle graph you can make a table showing the number of students that liked each type of movie.
Comedy 6
Adventure 8
Music 3
Horror 5
Cartoon 2

How many students are in Miss. Carroll's Class?
First add the numbers in the sections of the graph.
                        6 + 3 + 5 + 2 + 8 = 24
There are 24 students in Miss. Carroll's Class.

What fractional part of the class chose comedy as its favorite?

To find what fractional part:

  • Write the fraction with the number of students who like comedy as the numerator and the number of students in class as the denominator.

  • Write the fraction in simplest form.

ClownOne fourth of the class chose comedy as its favorite.

Worm Remember: The greater the value of the data, the wider the wedge that represents the value.
