It is essential to connect and apply
mathematical information to
solve problems.

Math is all around us and we use it daily.
Let's think about how we use math in our daily lives.

We use math when we stop to purchase gasoline for our vehicles.

If gasoline sells for $3.06 a gallon, approximately how many gallons of gasoline can you purchase with $20.00?

If you use estimation, $3.06 rounds to $3.00. 3 x 6 = 18, 3 x 7 = 21, therefore you can purchase around 6 gallons of gasoline for the car.

When we cook we use math.
Sometimes we want to double a recipe.
Let's take a look at a simple recipe and how you use math to make a double batch.

You want to make cookies.

The recipe calls for:
        2 cups of flour
        1/2 cup water
        1/2 cup sugar
        1/4 cup oil
        1 tablespoon of baking soda
        1 egg

Now suppose you want to double the recipe.

You now need: 2 x 2 cups of flour = 4 cups of flour
                          2 x 1/2 cup water = 1 cup water
                          2 x 1/2 cup sugar = 1 cup of sugar
                          2 x 1/4 cup oil = 1/2 cup oil
                          2 x 1 tablespoon of baking soda =2 tablespoons
                          2 x 1 egg = 2 eggs

Making curtains

Lisa bought two different types of material to make curtains. The length of the first material was 30½ inches and the length of the second was 36¼ inches .   How much material did she buy?

Solution:

30½ + 36¼ =

 Step 1: Find a common denominator
2= 2, 4
4= 4

LCM= 4

Step 2: Write equivalent fractions
1 x2/2 x2  = 2/4
1 x1/1 x4  = 1/4

Step 3: Add the numerators. Simplify if possible. Add the whole numbers.

    2 + 1 = 3 so...

2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4

30½ + 36¼ = 66¾ yards

Remember, we use math every day.  It is important to connect and apply math when solving problems.
