Factors are two or more numbers that are multiplied to give a product. 2 x 5 = 10

             factors of 10

Common factor is a number that is a factor of two or more products.
1 x 18 = 18
2 x 9 = 18
3 x 6 = 18
9 x 2 = 18
The factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18.

The factors of 24 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.

The common factors of 18 and 24 are: 1, 2, 3, 6.

The greatest common factor (GCF) of two or more products is the greatest number that is a factor of those products.

Example:
What is the greatest common factor (GCF) of 24 and 18?

24: factors are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.

18: factors are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18.

1 x 12 = 24 Write all the factors for each number. Put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Identify the common factors and then find the GCF. 1 x 18 = 18 Write all the factors for each number. Put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Identify the common factors and then find the GCF.
2 x 12 = 24 2 x 9 = 18
3 x 8 = 24 3 x 6 = 18
4 x 6 = 24 9 x 2 = 18

Hint: Knowing how to find common factors of numbers, especially knowing how to find the GCF, is an essential skill for writing fractions in simplest form.
