Why in the world do we use contractions?

A contraction is a word made by putting
two words together. 

We use contractions to shorten what we
say or write.

When we write a contraction we use an
apostrophe (')
to show where the letters have been left out.

do + not = don't  
The o was left out in the word not.  We use an (') to take it's place.

are + not = aren't
