Contractions...

What in the world is a contraction?
Why in the world do we use
contractions?

A contraction is a word made by putting
two words together.

We use contractions to shorten what we
say or write.

When we write a contraction we use an
apostrophe (
')
to show where the letters have been left out.

Let's

at some contractions.
with the word
NOT.

do + n
ot = don't

The
o was left out in the word not.  We use an (') to take it's place.

are + n
ot = aren't
The
o was left out in the word not.  We use an (') to take it's place.

could + n
ot = couldn't
The
o was left out in the word not.  We use an (') to take it's place.
