A statement of FACT can be proved TRUE or FALSE

A statement of OPINION is what someone believes or thinks.  There may or may not be a good reason to think this way.

Words that give you clues that a statement is an opinion are believe, like, and should. 
These words express how someone feels.

Facts:

A is the first letter of the alphabet.
Basketball is played with a round ball.
Turtles have a hard shell.

 

  

 

 

 
These are
Opinions:
I believe ice cream is everyone's  favorite food.
I like soccer the best.
Everyone should play basketball.

REMEMBER: A FACT can be proved true or false.
An OPINION is what someone believes or thinks.

 

Directions: Read each statement. THINK if the statement can be proved true or if it is what someone feels.

 I like chocolate candy bars for a snack.
                                              

 Dogs and cats have four legs.     
                                               

 I think everyone should play soccer.
