Tips for Completing A New York State Listening Test

         * Listen carefully the first time the story is read.
      * Take careful notes the second time the story is read.

When you are listening carefully you...

  • place your eyes on the speaker
  • turn in the direction of the speaker
  • have nothing in your hands
  • think about what is happening in the story
  • make the pictures in your mind to create the story

What do you write down?

     * The characters
  * The setting (where & when)
  * The problem & solution
  * The main events (write them in order!)
  *  Any list of things or items

Remember:* Listen carefully for important information.

*Take notes the SECOND time the story is read.

*Do NOT read the questions until after hearing the story 2 times.
