Some children may need help in hearing the sounds in words.  Clapping syllables can help the child to think about the order of sounds in spoken words, and help the child to analyze a new word he wants to read or write into its sequence of sounds.  Hearing big chunks is easier for a child especially in one or two syllable words he knows well.  Names are some of the easiest words to start with.  Just ask the child to say and clap the parts he can hear.  Start with one or two syllable words and later move to three or four syllables.  Clapping syllables can be done when the opportunity comes up in reading or writing.  Often in interactive writing we say a word slowly and then clap the parts before attempting to write it.  Sometimes during reading we may notice a longer word and clap to hear how many parts it has.  Hearing the parts in words can help a child to hear the sounds and analyze how to write new words.
"Hmmmm...how do I spell revolution?  Re-vo-lu-tion... it has four parts!  I can do it!
