Writing is important because it helps us communicate information, or tell important things.  One way we write is to label things, or give them a name.  For example, if I see this picture

I can tell it is a cat. I can use my writing to label it, or give it a name.  I can write the word cat underneath the picture so it looks like this:

cat
If I don't know how to write the word cat, I can write the letters I hear when I say cat:
c t

Looking at this picture,
I know it is a tree, so I can write the word tree underneath the picture so other people can read its name.

tree
If I don't know how to write the word tree, I can write the letters I hear when I say tree:
tre
