What in the world is a punctuation mark?

A punctuation mark is used in writing.

       It shows where a sentence ends and another begins.
         It separates ideas.
         It gives the reader a chance to pause between sentences.
          It helps us to understand writing.

A period is one type of punctuation mark.

         It looks like this   

       It is used at the end of a sentence that doesn't ask a  
           question or show excitement

         Your voice may get lower when you finish reading a sentence
            that has a period
.

       A period is used at the end of a statement.
    A
statement is a sentence that tells something.

Believe it or not, you use statements everyday. A statement is a telling sentence. Here are some examples of statements...

         I have to do my reading homework.

         My puppy is cute.

         Today is a rainy day.

You probably do not use commands as often as you use statements. Here are some examples of commands...

    Sit at your desk and do your homework.
