Conference Questions for Developing Writers

As students begin to plan:

  • What are you planning to write about?
  • How did you choose your topic? How can you narrow it?
  • How and where can you gather ideas for your writing?
  • Who will be your audience?
  • What form could your writing take?
  • How will you organize your ideas?
  • What do you plan to do next?

As students are writing:

  • How is your writing going?
  • What else do you know about this?
  • What do you plan to do next?
  • Are you having any problems?

As students revise their writing:

  • How do you plan to revise your writing?
  • What kinds of revisions have you already made?
  • What part of this work do you think is the best? Why?
  • What is the most important message that you are trying to communicate? Have you communicated that message?
  • What are you trying to say here? Do you think it says (or shows) that message? Does this line make sense?
  • What do you plan to do next?
  • How has your partner helped you?
  • What kind of help do you want from your writing group?
  • What do you like best about your writing?
  • How can I help you proofread your writing?
  • Would you read this for me, please?
  • Are you ready to make your final copy?
  • If you were writing this composition again, what changes would you make?
  • Do you think readers will like this work? Why? Why not?
  • How is this piece of writing better than others that you have written?
