to America
Long Journey at Sea
Immigrants
searching for a better life traveled by boat to America. The trip
was very long and hard. The travelers lived often lived below deck
for almost three weeks. The ate nothing more than watery soup and
black bread for days. Many immigrants got sick during the long
journey.
Ellis Island
All immigrants arriving by boat were sent
to Ellis Island. Ellis Island was an immigration center that
registered all new immigrants. Everyone was checked by a doctor.
Anyone who was sick, was sent back to their country by boat!
Life in America
Life in America was very hard. Many immigrants worked several jobs
and lived in very poor housing. Woman and even young children
were forced to work just to survive.
How America Changed
Thousands of immigrants came to our country in the early 1900's.
They brought many important things to our country. They brought different
languages, religions and cultures.
