Blending Sounds

Sometimes when you are reading, you come to a word you don't know.  One way to figure out this word is to blend the letter sounds. Sometimes we call this stretching the word.

It's like a train!  You hook the sounds together just like you hook the train cars together.  Keep the letter sounds close together so you don't lose a letter sound.  It shouldn't sound choppy like the train cars are coming unhooked.  Let's learn how to do this:

When you see this word
sun

say each letter sound slowly:
ssss   uuuu    nnnn

Then, say them faster and hook them together:
s/u/n

Let's try another one:

man

Say each letter sound slowly
mmmm   aaaa   nnn

Now, say them faster and hook them together:
m/a/n
