When working
with a student on blending sounds, playful oral games are a must!
Begin with simple, single syllable words. Avoid the fast
blended consonant combinations (fl, cr, etc.) until the student has mastered basic
blending. Be sure that you are not modeling choppy blending--the
sounds should be smoothly hooked together. Smooth blending is the
key to success!
Follow this format when working on blending sounds.
Parent or Teacher: Say “
(the word) ” the parent slowly stretches out the word
Child: The child repeats the word
slowly
Parent or Teacher: “Now say it
regular”
Child: The child says the sounds
at regular speed.
For Example:
Parent or Teacher: “Say ‘sssuuunn’
(the word ‘sun’ stretched out slowly)
Child: repeats “sssuuunn”
Parent: “Now say it regular”
Child: “sun”
