Adding "ed" to Verbs

When you want to talk about something you did in the past, you often add "ed" to the end of the word. 

Today, I walk to the store. (Happening now)
Yesterday
, I walked to the store.
(Happened in the past)

Right now, I play with my friends. (Happening now)
Last night, I played with my friends.
(Happened in the past)

There are different ways to add "ed" to a word. 

1. If the word ends with a silent e, just add d to the word to show it happened in the past.

smile

smiled

use

used

close

closed

 

2. If the word ends with a consonant, add ed to the word to show it happened in the past.

talk

talked

push

pushed

scream

screamed

  3.  If the word ends with a y, first change the y to an i,
    then add ed to the word to show it happened
in the past.

hurry                      hurried
worry                      worried
cry                         cried

 

"ed" at the end of a word can sound differently. Sometimes, it sounds like "d".
climbed     splashed     called

Sometimes, "ed" sounds like "t".
rushed     wished    thanked

It can even sound like "ed" or "id".
melted     wanted     ended

However it sounds, "ed" shows that you did something in the past.
