Writing is important because it helps us communicate information, or tell important things.  One way we write is to label things, or give them a name.  For example, if I see this picture

I can tell it is a butterfly. I can use my writing to label it, or give it a name.  I can write the word butterfly underneath the picture so it looks like this:

butterfly
If I don't know how to write the word butterfly, I can write the letters I hear when I say butterfly:
b u t r f l i

Looking at this picture,

I know it is a kangaroo, so I can write the word kangaroo underneath the picture so other people can read its name.

kangaroo
If I don't know how to write the word kangaroo, I can write the letters I hear when I say kangaroo:
k g r u
