Teacher's Resource: Making Edible Maps: Social Studies’ Lesson

Objective: Students will make a 3D physical map, from edible materials, of Mexico using a paper physical map as a guide, which was completed prior to the lesson. Students will work cooperatively in groups to decide on a map key. Students will individually make an edible map.

Materials:
Map outline
Map transparency
Paper physical map of Mexico already completed
Instructions
Mexico map outline
Wax paper
Dough for base
Variety of candy and frosting
Paper towels
Craft sticks
Cooperative learning role cards
Styrofoam bases

Procedure:
Review, using an overhead, what a map key and compass rose are.
Review the paper physical map completed prior to this lesson.
Pass out cards, instructions, and assign roles for cooperative learning.
Go over instructions.
Pass out materials.

Teacher facilitates as students work in groups.

Edible Map Rubric

This is a culminating activity for our map unit. Each child should have a physical map of Mexico with a correct map key and compass rose.

Students will bring completed projects home to share with their family.
