Chronological Order

When writing, be sure to put events in chronological order.

What is chronological order?

hronological rder
refers to the order in which the
events happened in real time.

There are signal words that can help you put events in order:

                                                         first
                                                         next

                                                        then

                                                        after

                                                        finally

Let's at an example of how you might use
chronological order in an answer or an essay.

What events led to the start of the American Revolution?

The American colonists were unhappy with British
   rule.
First, the British put a tax on certain goods. Then,
many Patriots refused to buy some of the taxed items.

Next,  Patriots dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest
   the taxes.
After that, the colonists formed a militia to
   stop the British at Lexington.
Finally, the American
   Revolution began.

Let's at another example.

How did the Underground Railroad begin?

The Underground Railroad helped African Americans
   escape from slavery.
First, slaves began to seek
   freedom by escaping to Canada.
Next, a group of people,
white and black, began to help the slaves.
Then, these
station masters started to hide the slaves and provided
them with food and clothing along the way.
Finally, the
Underground Railroad became successful in helping
   slaves move north.
