Run-on Sentences

      When you edit your writing, look for    run-on sentences.

 A run-on sentence occurs when a writer puts 2 ideas together with no punctuation.  It can also occur when a comma is used without a conjunction.

Run-on    My mother came to school to pick me up,    
                       she was late.
 

This can be correctly written as...

                      My mother came to school to pick me up.
                      She was late.

                                                   OR

                     My mother came to school to pick me up, but
                     she was late.

Run-on    Jan's brother goes to high school he is in 9th 
                     grade.

                     This can be correctly written as...

                     Jan's brother goes to high school, and he is in
                     9th grade.

                                                    OR

                     Jan's brother goes to high school.  He is in
                     9th grade.

Run-on    Paul mowed the lawn for Dad he trimmed the
                       hedges.

                      This can be correctly written as...

                      Paul mowed the lawn for Dad, and he
                      trimmed the hedges.

                                             OR

                      Paul mowed the lawn for Dad. He trimmed
                      the hedges.
