The type of writing you use depends on your audience -- -- who you are writing to.
Sometimes you use formal writing if your writing will be read by many people or will be judged.
Other times you use informal writing if your writing will be read by a friend or by yourself.
When would you use formal writing?
You are writing a letter of application for a new job.
You are writing an essay comparing two novels.
You are writing a report on the Iroquois Indians.
You are writing an article for the school newspaper.
When can you write informally?
You are sending an email to a friend.
You are sending a text message on your cell phone.
You are writing in your journal.
You are leaving a note for your mother.

Know your audience when you are writing.
