LETTERS TO THE EDITOR and choose, from the list, the writer's purpose in writing the letter.

Dear Editor,

Did you know that the landfills are overflowing with the garbage and waste products that citizens throw away, each and every day?  The amount of waste could be reduced significantly if people would recycle on a regular basis.  There are many products that can be recycled such as cans, bottles, and plastics.  Newspapers can also be recycled instead of tossing them away.  We can help to preserve the earth by participating in the local recycling program.  You can help too.

                                    Yours truly,

                                    Gabe Garbage

Dear Editor,

The dog is man's best friend.  Everyone knows this to be true.  Yet we have no holiday to honor the dog and all that he contributes to families and society.  The contribution of dogs can no longer be ignored!  A national holiday for dogs should be declared.  It could be called DOG'S DAY (just as we have Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day).  Children would have this very important holiday as a vacation day from school, and parents and children could stay at home to honor their dogs .  Don't let the family dog be taken for granted any longer!

                                       Yours truly,

                                       Doug Dawg

Dear Editor,

The right to vote is a privilege that we treasure in our country.  Not all citizens in other countries around the world are as fortunate as we are.  Everyone needs to exercise this right and get out to vote in November's election.  It is your patriotic duty to do your part as a citizen of this country and vote in the upcoming election.  Don't let others elect your officials.  Vote!

                                            Sincerely,

                                            Vince Voter
