Sometimes you need to listen for a special purpose.

Your teacher might ask you to listen for an extended period of time.

When might you be asked to listen?
     *  To hear a story on tape
     *  To listen to a story being read aloud
     *  To listen to a guest speaker
     *  To listen to a lecture from the teacher

Being a good listener takes practice.

   To be a good listener you must:
     *  Stay in one place.
     *  Sit quietly.
     *  Pay attention.
     *  Think about what you are listening to.

  After listening you may be asked to report on
  what you heard. You may...

  *  Write a response.
  *  Answer a question.
  *  Discuss with a partner or a group.

Listening has a purpose.
