Speaking To Your Audience
Lesson

Know your audience
when you speak.

Speaking to your friends...

...is different from speaking to your teacher or in front of your class.

How would you speak to your friends?

    You might speak in incomplete sentences.
    You might use "slang" words.
         Your conversation might sound like this:

   Emily: "Can ya come to my house after school?"
  Sara:  "Can't. My bro has a b'ball game. Ma said come
               right home."
  Emily: "K, maybe later. Call me."

How would you speak to your teacher?

     You would speak in complete sentences.
     You would use proper vocabulary.
            The conversation might sound like this:

    Mrs. Hall:  "Sara, can you stay after school today to
                          work on your project?"
   Sara:         "I'm sorry, Mrs. Hall. My mother told me to
                      come right home after school.  My brother
                      has a baseball game, and my mother wants
                      me to go watch."

How were the two conversations different?

Friends might say:
  *
"ya" instead of "you"
  *
"bro" instead of "brother"
  *
"b'ball" instead of "baseball"
                To your teacher you speak:
                        * with respect
                        * in complete sentences
                        * with proper words and English
