Read
the following 2 articles on early explorers of New York.
|
Giovanni da Verrazano
In 1524, France sent an Italian explorer named Giovanni de
Verrazano to explore the
land north of where Columbus had sailed. Verrazano sailed to the
coast of present day
South Carolina and then sailed north. In April 1524 he sailed into
the water that is
today called New York Bay. When Verrazano went out in a small boat
to explore, he was
greeted by the Native Americans of the area. He soon returned to
his ship with the
knowledge that this continent was not Asia, but a new land.

Henry Hudson Henry
Hudson was an English sea captain who was sent by the Dutch to
explore the area
around present day New York. In 1609, in sailed his ship, the Half
Moon, into New York
Bay. Searching for a route across the continent, Hudson sailed up
the Hudson River.
Along the way he met and traded with Native Americans for furs and
food. As the river
narrowed near present-day Albany, Hudson realized this would not be
the route to Asia
and turned back. However, the Dutch had discovered an excellent
harbor and claimed
this land for the Netherlands..

Peter Minuit Peter
Minuit arrived in 1624 to become the new governor of New Amsterdam.
Soon he
bought the island of Manhattan from the Lenni Lenape Indians for
items worth about
$24. He soon built a fort on the southern end of Manhattan and
invited settlers to move
there raising the population of the colony to around 200. This
settlement was called New
Amsteram and later became New York City. He also opened trade with
the colony of
Plymouth in New England. He served as governor of the colony
until 1631.

Peter Stuyvesant In
1647, Peter Stuyvesant arrived in New Amsterdam to become the new
governor. He
made many new laws to make life safer for the Dutch settlers.
Because there was always
a danger of the wood houses catching fire, Stuyvesant made laws
regulating how chimneys
were built. He also started a type of police force of watchman who
walked the streets at
night to protect the citizens. In 1664, Stuyvesant surrendered the
colony to the British
to avoid attack.
