Just Enough Carrots by Stuart Murphy Read and discuss the book with the children. Review the words fewer, same and more. Give small groups of children (2-3) a baggie with food pictures, an index card and a marker. Each group should have a different number of items in the baggie. The groups count the number of items and write the numeral on the card. Show the teacher's baggie. Have each group compare their group's baggie to the teacher baggie, deciding if their group's baggie has fewer, the same as or more than the teacher's baggie. They should record the term showing how their baggie compares to the teacher's baggie on the index card too. Make a chart with the words fewer, the same, and more across the top. Place the teacher's baggie in the column with the same. Ask each group to come up and place their groups' baggie appropriately on the chart. Discuss the graph. Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes Read the book to the class and discuss the lengths of names. Review the terms, fewer, same as and more than. Model making a name comparison with your own name. Children should write their name in large boxes of graph paper, writing one letter to a box. The child should then place their name on the name chart appropriately, indicating whether his/her name has fewer letters, the same letters as or more letters than your name. Discuss the graph results.
