When we learn about combining sets we are beginning the process of addition.  We will look first at pictures showing the combining of sets.

We will take the yellow smile faces in one set and combine them with the red heart from the other set creating a new set of smiles and hearts.

Now we will take the pink diamonds and combine them with the blue triangles in a new set.

Now let's combine 2 other sets to make a new set.

We can see from the combination of sets above that when 2 sets are combined they create a larger set.

When we combine sets we can add numbers to show that the new set is larger (usually) than the original sets.

        2        +       1          =     3

The combined set 3 is larger than either of the first sets 2 or 1.

        4      +       2       =          6

This combined set is larger than either of the first sets 4 or 2.

       3     +      3      =           6

This combined set is larger than either of the first sets 3 or 3.
