Two Little Witches by Harriet Ziefert

Read the book.  Discuss/review number sentences.  Write equations on a chart using different attributes of the book.  Have volunteers come up and place corresponding numerals in the equation.  Children may also place that number of stickers under the numeral in the equation.  Another volunteer may then come up and count up the number of stickers to reveal sum of combined sets.  Ask children to take turns reading the "number sentences" aloud.

  Domino Addition by Lynette Long

Read the book.  Tell children that when you reread the book you would like them to share the different combinations that add up to 10.  List on a chart as the examples are shared.  Have children create and share with the class their own 1 to 10 book of combinations to 10.

A Number of Animals by Kate Green

Read the story aloud making sure children see each picture as you go.  Have children point out the numbers of animals read about on each page. Focus on the arrangement esp. on pages 9 and 10, of the different arrangements of pigs and chicks.  Children may enjoy making their own combinations of animals for 9 and 10.  This can be done with children illustrating, flannel board pieces and/or plastic/rubber farm animals.

Ten Flashing Fireflies by Philemon Sturges

Read the book aloud placing emphasis on the rhythm and rhyme.  The children may want to join in as they catch on to the rhythm.  Pause at each spread of the book to allow the children an opportunity to count the 10 fireflies. Make sure they count the fireflies both inside and outside the jar.  Before you read the last page ask children to predict how many fireflies they will see inside and outside the jar.

  Fish Eyes by Lois Ehlert

Read the book aloud. Share with the children that you will reread the book and this time the children should focus their attention on the action of joining and the words plus me.  Talk about what happens each time the narrator joins a group of fish.  Use the pictures to model a joining story.  Have the children share their joining stories for the other pages.  As they share their stories record their equations on chart paper.
