In this lesson we will see how and why objects may be sorted, classified, sequenced or patterned.

  Let's look at these objects.

What would be the best way to sort these?

The objects were sorted and placed in 2 separate groups.  The suns and moons are 2 different kinds of things.  The moons are in one group and the suns are in another group.

Let's look at these things.

This is how I sorted the ducks.  I looked at the sizes.  I put the big ducks in one group and the little ducks in another group.

Now let's look at these things.

Maybe you are thinking about how you would group the balls.

This is how I grouped the balls!  Did I group by kinds?  No they are all the same kind of balls.  Did I group by size?  No the balls are all the same size!  Then how did I group these balls?

I noticed the balls were two different colors!  I put the orange balls in one group and the green balls in another group!  Did you figure out that was what I did?

When you are asked to explain how you group things-

THINK

1-  Can I group by kind?  Are the objects the same things or different?
2-  Can I group by size?  Are the objects different sizes?
3-  Can I group by color?  Is the color the only difference you see?
