The Three Little Pigs

Share several different versions of The Three Little Pigs.  After reading each version discuss what the children liked about that version.  When several versions have been shared give each child a post it note to write her/his name on.  These post its will then be used by the children to stick to the cover of their favorite version of The Three Little Pigs.  After each child has placed her/his name on her/his favorite version discuss and graph the findings on a class graph.

After reading and discussing the book survey the children in the class to determine what may be the favorite pet of the class.  On a graph have pictures of each kind of pet anyone in the class may have.  Then give children stickers to place on the graph to show which kind of pet is their favorite.  When each child has shared her/his favorite kind of pet discuss the graph and its findings with questions like "Which pet is the favorite?"  "Which pet got the least votes?"  "Did any pets get the same amount of votes?".

Read and discuss the book with the children.  Then give the children an opportunity to sample a variety of muffins to determine what would be their favorite kind of muffin.  On a prepared chart in advance have the varieties of muffins sampled listed.  Give each child a post it on which to write her/his name.  Have each child place her/his name next to the variety of muffin s/he most enjoyed.  Discuss the results of the chart with questions such as "What is the class favorite muffin?"  "Which muffin was picked as least favorite?"  "Did any kinds of muffins get the same umber of votes?"

Read and discuss the book.  Review the terms fewer, same, more.  Share  baggies of food  (varying amounts in each baggie) with small groups of children.  Groups count the food, write the number on a piece of paper.  Share a teacher's baggie of food and the corresponding number.  Have each group compare their baggie to the teacher's baggie sharing whether their baggie has fewer than, the same as or more than the teacher's baggie.  On a chart have each group place their baggie in the correct place-fewer, same, more.  Discuss the graph results.

   Jelly Beans for Sale by Bruce McMillan

Read the book.  Model how to sort jelly beans by color.  Give each child a cup or bag of jelly beans to sort by color.  Children may complete a jelly bean color graph.  Encourage children to share their graph with others.
