Buggy Over Addition- Since ladybugs gather in groups to hibernate in the fall, this self-checking math center comes just in the nick of time! For each student, program a slip of paper with a different addition fact (sum 10 or less.) Place the slips in a decorated container. Also make a class supply of lady bugs with moveable wings. Place the container, the supply of ladybugs, scissors and black sticky dots, brads, black construction- paper scraps, glue, and white and black crayons at the center. A student cuts out a ladybug body and a pair of wings, then he uses a brads to attach the wings to the body. Next he draws a math fact from the container. On each wing he writes one addend and attaches a corresponding number of black sticky dots. Using a white crayon, he draws an addition symbol on the bug's head, then he spreads the wings and writes the fact sum on its body. Lastly he closes the wings and attaches two construction-paper antennae. Place completed student made ladybugs at a math center. For each ladybug, a student reads the math fact and states its sum, then he carefully spreads the ladybug's wings to check his work. (Debra Veronica-NY)
