One White Sail by S.T. Gaine

Before reading the book aloud do a picture walk with the children.  Have the children count what they see.  Read the story aloud.  Ask the children how the artist who painted the pictures showed the numbers.  The artist painted 2 houses.  How else did he show 2?  What other numbers were shown in the picture of the 2 houses?

What's It Like To Be A Fish? by Wendy Pfeffer

Read the story aloud.  In advance collect a supply of plastic fish and store them in a bowl.  For each number that you would like to include create a construction paper fishbowl.  Add decorative details then laminate each fishbowl.  Program each construction paper bowl with a different numeral or number word.  Place the bowl of fish and the fishbowl cutouts in a center.  Children will arrange the bowls in the correct numerical order.  Then the child will place the correct number of fish on each fishbowl.

Jump, Frog, Jump! by Robert Kalan

Prepare ahead 20 lily pad cutouts with a different numeral from 1-20 (or numbers you designate) and each of 20 frog cutouts with a different number word from 1 to 20(or numbers you designate).

Read the book aloud to the children.  After reading place the lily pads in a circle on the floor and the frogs on a nearby table.  Play lively music as the children walk around the circle.  When the music ends each child will pick up the lily pad closest to him/her, identify the numeral and jump that many times.  Next have the child find the frog cutout that matches his/her numeral.  After replacing the frogs and the lily pads, begin the music again and continue playing in the same manner.

A Million Fish...More Or Less by Patricia C. McKissack

In advance program a supply of fish cutouts with a different numeral from 1 to 10.  Slide a paper clip onto each fish to resemble the fish's mouth.  Store all the fish in a bowl.  Next make a fishing pole from a wooden dowel and string. Tie a magnet to the end of the fishing line.  Arrange the bowl of fish and the fishing pole in a center along with a supply of counters and a bowl of fish shaped crackers.

Read the story aloud and direct the children with modeling to the center where each child will have an opportunity to go fishing.

When a child visits this center have him/her drop the line into the tub of fish and pull out a fish.  Instruct the child to read the number on the fish he/she caught and to count out that many fish shaped crackers.  The crackers may be enjoyed as a snack.

  Swimmy by Leo Lionni

Prepare in advance enough fish shaped bingo cards for each child in the class.  On each fish bingo card write 6 numerals between 1-10 in random order.

Read the story aloud to the children.  Discuss the story.  Direct children to the fish bingo game and how they will play.  To play, call out numbers at random.  Have each child cover the corresponding numerals with fish shaped crackers.  The first student to cover all his/her numerals and correctly reads the numerals he/she covered wins the first round of play.  allow the children to eat their crackers at the end of the game.

One Smiling Grandma: A Caribbean Counting Book by Ann Marie Linden

Read the book aloud.  Encourage the children to find and count things in their room.  Divide the class in pairs.  Give each pair a different number word from one to ten.  You may need to duplicate some of the number words.  Take the  class on a walk around the school.  have the children find their specified number of items.  Back in the classroom ask each pair to illustrate its findings.  Have partners write/dictate text for their page and to label the page with the corresponding number word and numeral.  Bind the sequenced pages in a book, give the book cover a title.

If You Give  A Moose A Muffin by Felicia Bond

Read the story aloud, discuss the cause and effect.  Create game boards in advance that would resemble muffin tins with the  6 cups randomly labeled with a numeral from 1-10.  Provide each student with some "moose berries"  (blue beads or blue pompoms.)  Have each child put the correct number of berries into each muffin cup.

The M&M's Brand Chocolate Candies Counting Book by Barbara Barbieri McGrath

After reading this book aloud give each child a package of M&Ms and a white paper plate.  Reread the book and have each child follow the directions on each page of the book.  Have the children set the wrapper aside for a later activity.

As a follow up activity have each child make his/her own counting book.  Give each child 12 sheets of paper.  Have each child draw and color 1 M&M on a sheet of paper, then write the numeral 1 and the number word one on the same page.  On the next page the child should draw and color 2 M&Ms.  Write the numeral 2 and the number word 2.  Continue this way until the child has a page for each numeral 1 to 10.  The children should then sequence the pages correctly.  Place the pages between two pages that will be the covers of the book.  On the cover write "My M&Ms Counting Book" and glue the empty M&M wrapper on the cover.
