How Many Feet?  How Many Tails?  -A Book of Math Riddles by Marilyn Burns

Read the book aloud asking children to see how the pictures can help in answering the riddles.  After reading the book the first time share with children that you will give them counters to use the show how the picture clues solve the riddles.  Read the riddles, show the pictures and have the children represent the picture clues with their counters to verify the solution.  An example:  the first riddle asks "What has eight feet, two tails and pulls a wagon?"  Show the answer.  Each child would then use a counter to represent each foot on the two horses and  a counter for each tail.

As you read the book to the children ask them to comment on the pictures.  Use self stick notes to cover the number sentence on each 2 page spread as you reread the story.  After you reread each 2 page spread ask the children to show a plus sign with their fingers if this a story about adding and a minus sign if this is a story about separating groups.  Place the book and counters in a center.  Explain to children that they may use the counters to represent the objects in the book and complete the adding or subtracting sentences.
