Read the book aloud to the children. Focus on the repetitive text of "and with a gulp," and "and a gurgle." direct the children to clap each time they hear the phrase "and with a gulp," and to make a swallowing sound each time they hear "and a gurgle." Give each child a paper plate and 10 goldfish crackers. Reread the story. Encourage the children to eat a goldfish cracker each time a piranha is eaten in the story.
Read the story aloud. Discuss how the children can count the bunnies in the book. Share how the children can help to create a bunny number line to be used in the classroom. Share a standing bunny cut outs with each child in the class. After referring to the handmade blankets in the story have each child color a blanket and his/her bunny. assign each student a numeral and a tracer for that numeral. Direct each child to trace and cut out his/her bunny's numeral. Display the bunnies in a row as a number line. Have the students attach the numeral identifying each bunny in the line.
Once you have read the book ask for volunteers to act the story out. Have two children hold a blanket or sheet at a height that still allows the children to be seen from behind the sheet or blanket. Ask for 10 volunteers to stand behind the sheet or blanket. As you reread the story have a child leave as the repetitive phrase "They all rolled over and 1 fell out." is read. Repeat the activity until every child has had a chance to participate. During the rereading pause often and ask the children to tell how many children are still behind the sheet/blanket.
