Read the book aloud. Allow children to join in as they feel comfortable with the pattern and rhyme. Reread the book. this time have the children recall and act out the bear's actions in order. The children should act out what the bears did first, second and so on. As an extension create a simple list of things (1-5) for the children to do. For example 1st-touch your nose, 2nd-clap 2 times. 3rd-hop on one foot, etc..
Read aloud the nursery rhyme Old Mother Hubbard until the children are comfortable and able to repeat the rhyme with you. Then share with the children that you can adapt this rhyme. Have children suggest what could have been in Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. Make a large construction paper cupboard with 3 shelves. (Or use a cupboard from your housekeeping area) Place various objects on the cupboards shelves. Ask the children to identify what Old Mother Hubbard found on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd shelves of the cupboard.
Read aloud the book. Direct children to assist you in completing a table like the one shown. Elicit from children that the ordinal number of the day of Christmas matches the number of gifts given on that day.
In advance create two sets of 7 brothers on each of seven colors of construction paper. Cut out the patterns, label one set with the ordinal words "first" through "seventh" and label the other set of brothers with numerals "one" through "seven". Read the story aloud. Discuss the story, talking about the number of the brothers and the ordinal position of the brothers. Share with the children that to use these cutouts 1 student will sequence the cutouts with the ordinal numbers. Then he/she will match each of the numbered cutouts to the corresponding ordinal one.
