Ten Apples Up On Top by Theo Le Sieg

Read the story to the children.  Discuss how each animal carefully arranges 10 apples on top of their heads.  Have children count all the apples on all the heads.  Encourage the children to count by 10s to do this.

The Cheerios Counting Book by Barbara Barbieri

Read the book to the children. Give each child a pipe cleaner and a small paper cup with Cheerios.  Have the children hold their pipe cleaners sideways and place 10 cheerios on it.  Ask a volunteer to come to the front of the class and count how many cheerios s/he has on her/his pipe cleaner.  Explain to the children that this is one group of 10.  Ask a second child to come to the front, explaining that now we have 2 sets of 10, or 20 cheerios in all.  Continue with student volunteers coming to the front of the room until you have 10 children with their 10s pipe cleaners representing 100 cheerios.
