Numbers are made up of digits in the same way that words are made up of letters.

The number...

(seventy-six)

is made up of the digits    7, and 6. Each digit has a special value which depends on its place in the number.

tens

ones

7

6

7 in the tens place = 70

6 in the ones place = 6

A number is composed by adding those values together.

    70
+     6
        76

   OR       70 + 6 = 76

A number is decomposed when you start with the number

and you give the value of each digit in the number.

                      32 =  30  + 2

Compose these numbers.

1.  60 + 4

2.   40 + 6

3.  70 + 5
