Sometimes you can justify an answer by using manipulatives.

Susan wanted to count the money in her piggy bank, but she doesn't want to break it open!  What can she do?
Because she knows she puts a quarter in her bank every week, and she thinks she has used this bank for 10 weeks she can find an answer without breaking her bank.
   = $1.00

= $1.00

= $0.50

 $1.00 +  $1.00 +  $0.50 = $2.50

So using manipulatives (the coins) Susan could count her money without breaking her bank!

You can use different manipulatives, like counters or clocks or number lines, to make sure your answer is correct.
