Sometimes you can use certain objects to help you solve math
problems.
Will
Base 10 blocks help solve a problem?
Or how about counting
tiles?
Or coins?
or a Judy clock?
Using objects can help
you see the answer right in front of you instead of trying to see
the answer in your mind. Let's look at a problem and see what
objects we can use to help us solve the problem.
Joey has
10 seeds to plant. Each seed needs a hole. So far he has dug 6
holes. How many more must he dig?
Think
about what objects would give you a good "picture". I
think bi-colored chips might help!
First
count out 10 red chips (seeds) and then flip 6 of them
to yellow (holes dug).
Now count the red
holes to find out how many holes he needs to dig.
There are 4 red
chips and so----------- 4 holes left to dig.
Did the red chips, the manipulatives, make
the problem easier?
