There are many models you can use to make a math idea easier to understand.  In this lesson we will look at some of these models!

 

Here's the problem:

and here's a model.

   5 + 2 + 2 + 2 = ?

 

Here's the solution:

5 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 11

Let's look at another one! 

Here's the problem:
Name even numbers between and including 44 and 66

and here's a model that would help to solve this problem.
OK, first show that even numbers end in 0,2,4,6,or 8. The possible answers are shaded blue.

Now that you have the even numbers identified, you need to now find the numbers that are between 44 and 66.

Color the numbers  from 44 to 66 red.

Now you can see the numbers that are red and shaded blue. those numbers are your answers.

44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66

So you can see that models sometimes help you solve a math problem or show a math idea.
