When you multiply, it's just a faster way of adding!

Example 1:

1 car has 4 wheels.

How many wheels do 3 cars have?

  4 wheels        +  4 wheels    + 4 wheels =              12 wheels

Instead of adding you can multiply.

3 cars X 4 wheels each = 12 wheels

3 X 4 = 12

(Say - 3 times 4 equals 12)

Example 2:

1 can has 3 tennis balls

How many tennis balls are in 5 cans?

                   3      +   3       +    3     +    3     +    3       = 15

Instead of adding, you can multiply.

3 balls per can X   5 cans = 15 tennis balls

3 X 5 = 15

(Say -  3 times 5 equals 15)
