   Benny's Pennies by Pat Brisson

Read aloud the book.  Ask the children to predict how Benny will spend his pennies.  At the end of the story discuss how he did spend his pennies and how many he now has left. Reread the story, this time as Benny spends each penny ask the children to tell how many are left-use flannel board or overhead to further illustrate the concept of taking away and how many are left.

  Elevator Magic by Stuart Murphy

Read the book to the children.  Discuss the concept of "taking away", "separating."  At a center have "elevators" game boards looking like elevators with the various levels showing.  Have the children place their token at the top of the elevator.  Each child would then roll the dice moving their token that many floors down the elevator.  This may be played on the carpet with an elevator drawn on a  shower curtain.  The children (a few at a time) stand in the top floor of the elevator.  As they roll a dice they go down the elevator that many floors.  You may ask the child to say aloud the subtraction sentence that would go with his/her turn.
