For the first basic lesson on telling time, click on the arrow.

Facts you need to know for this lesson:
60 minutes = 1 hour 30 minutes = 1 half hour
Half way around the clock is 30 minutes.

The hour hand  points halfway between the 3 and the 4.

So we still say 3 because it is after 3:00 and has not yet reached 4:00

The minute hand points to the 6.

The 6 is halfway around the clock.

Look at the large blue arrow

It goes half way around the clock.

It starts at the 12 and ends at the 6.

We can say half past 3, or three thirty.

Remember, 30 minutes = one half hour.

The hour is 3. The minutes are 30.
This is thirty minutes after three.
We would write:  3:30
We would say:  "three thirty"

We can also write half past 3
or
30 minutes after 3.

Let's look at another one.
What time is it?
The hour hand is halfway between the 10 and 11.  So we say 10 because we know it is after 10:00 and has not yet reached 11:00.
The minute hand is half way around the clock.  So we say half past or 30.
The answer to, "What time is it?", is:
10:30
or
half past 10
or
30 minutes after 10.
