MST3.E.N.04.11
- Read and write decimals to hundredths, using money as a context
(number systems)
Question: 4 From Assessment Grade 5 Math 2006-07
Each square on the grids below equals $0.01.
What is the total amount of money shown by the shaded squares on the
grids?
GRID A
GRID B
- A $0.38
- B $0.62
- C $1.38
- D $1.62
|
Because each
square = $.01, the completely filled grid A on the left must
equal $1.00 (100 shaded squares). |
There are only
62 shaded squares in the grid on the right, therefore Grid
B = $0.62. |
|
Add GRID A + GRID B
$1.00 +
$0.62 = $1.62 |
Question: 15 From Assessment Grade 5 Math 2007-08
The table below shows some of the snack items sold at a football
game.
What is the order of the items in the table from the
least expensive to the
most expensive?
- A ice cream, chips, soda, hot dog, popcorn
- B popcorn, hot dog, soda, chips, ice cream
- C ice cream, hot dog, chips, soda, popcorn
- D popcorn, soda, chips, ice cream, hot dog
|
First, make sure you read
the question carefully. It is looking for the order from least
expensive to most expensive.
(CHEAPEST FIRST!) |
| Since these items
are already lined up vertically with decimal points under each
other, start comparing the largest place value. When you
do that, there is only one item with 0 in the dollars place
value, so that item, Ice Cream, is the least expensive and will
be listed first. (That eliminates B and D.) |
|
The next lowest value is a 1, and that
is only found with one item, the Chips, so they are the second
least expensive and will be listed next. (That eliminates C.)
|
It's best to compare the
remaining items to make sure your answer is right, but the
answer has to be A. |
