Topic Index | Grade 4 Math | Elementary Test Prep | StudyZone

When adding whole numbers
be sure that you ALWAYS
have the place value columns lined up
(ie: ones, tens, hundreds, etc.),

243 + 436=

hundreds

tens

ones

2 4 3

4

3

6

then add each column
starting with the ONES column
and move left.

  2 4 3
+4 3 6
  6 7 9

3,484 + 2,313 =

    3, 4 8  4                             ones             tens           hundreds       thousands
2, 3  3
add each column:   4+3=78+1=9,  4+3=7,  3+2=5

5, 7 9  7

                     so,  3,484 + 2,313 = 5,797

Examples:

   372                               836                          624
+524                             +112                        +235

  896                               948                          859
