Measurement

Area is the number of square units needed to cover a flat surface.

The easiest method to find the area of a shape, if it is a simple shape made up of straight lines, is by counting squares inside it.

1 square unit

The area is 5 square units because there are 5 squares.

Sometimes you need to count half squares to find the area of a figure.

1 square unit

The area is 5 square units.
 (4 whole + 2 half)

In a rectangle we can still find the area by counting the squares, but we can also multiply the two lengths together.

Rectangle: l x w
Square: s x s

 3 x 4 = 12

A = 12 square units
