The Associative Property of Multiplication can help you to multiply quickly and correctly.

Changing the grouping of the factors does not
change the product
.

rows: 3 groups of 2 rows: 2 groups of 3
columns: 6 groups of 3 columns: 6 groups of 3
(3 x 2) x 3 = 18 3 x (2 x 3) = 18

Think: "grouping." Associative Property

When Multiplying:

** First multiplying the parenthesis ( )

** Then multiply the last number to get your product.

(5 x 7) x 2
            35  x  2 =   70
is the same as...
5 x (7 x 2)
         5    14 =    70

Another Way To Look At It...

When Multiplying:

(2 x 5) x 3  =  2 x (5 x 3)
10 x 3  =  2 x 15
30  =  30

Example

associative property

(2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4)

6 x 4 = 2  x 12

24 = 24

Remember: Multiply the number in parentheses ( ) first.
