You can predict or draw conclusions when reading a graph.

Change in height, weight, and temperature can be predicted over time.

The following data is displayed in a table.  Make predictions from the table displayed below.

The first grade students were all measured and the data was recorded below.

Height of the first grade students
Students Height in Feet and Inches
Frank 3 feet 7 inches
Nicole 3 feet 4 inches
Phil 3 feet 6 inches
Lisa 3 feet 2 inches

The same students were measured in third grade, predict what their measurements might be.

Height of the third grade students

Students Height in Feet and Inches
Frank 4 feet 4 inches
Nicole 3 feet 11 inches
Phil 4 feet 3 inches
Lisa 3 feet 9 inches

You can predict that all the students will grow a few inches over the years.  If  your chart had all the students heights increase, you are correct.

The data was organized in a table  making it easier to read and interpret.

A bar graph is a graph that uses bars to show data.

Predict what the temperature will be for Saturday?
First look at the graph and locate where the lines end.  Look across at the y-axis; this will tell you what the temperature is for each day.

Next  you can see that this week every day was in the low seventies.

Answer: By looking at the graph you can see that if Saturday follows the same pattern the temperature will be in the low seventies.

The Carthage Fifth Graders are planting plants in their classroom. Each week they measured how high the plant had grown.  The students recorded the data below in a chart and line graph.

Height of Plants
Number of Weeks Height in Inches
Week 1 0.5
Week 2 1
Week 3 3
Week 4 5

A line graph is a graph that connects points to show how data changes over time.

Predict what the height of the plant will be during Week 5?

First look at the graph and locate Week 4.  This will tell you the height of the plant last week.

Next  use your finger and move up to where the point for Week 4 is.  This tells you that the plant was 5 inches last week.

Answer: By looking at the line graph you can see that in Week 5 the height of the plant will be bigger than 5 inches.  The graph shows that in Week 5 the plant will most likely be 7 inches.

Remember: Graphs, tables, and charts display data so that it can be organized, easily understood, and to help you make predictions.
