When
looking to solve a math problem,
you may want to refer
to any CHARTS
the question provides
to help you answer the questions.
Example 1:
Jimmy's
Deli
|
Sandwiches
Ham
Turkey
Bologna
Hamburg
HotDog |
$2.50 |
|
Potato Chips |
$0.75 |
|
3 Cookies |
$1.00 |
|
Drinks
Milk, Soda, or Coffee |
$1.25 |
Question:
Sharon had lunch at Jimmy's Deli and spent $4.50 for 3 items.
What did she have for lunch?
Explain your answer.
Think:
What 3 items on the menu board would total $4.50?
* Sandwich + Chips + Cookies = $4.25 ( No
)
* Chips + Cookies + Soda = $3.00 ( No
)
* Sandwich + Chips + Soda = $4.50 ( YES
! )
$2.50 + 0.75 + 1.25 = $4.50
Answer:
Sharon had a sandwich,
some chips, and a drink,
because the three items added together equal $4.50.

Example 2:
Julie's
Workouts
|
Exercise |
Average Time |
|
Running |
8 minutes per mile |
|
Biking |
3 minutes per mile |
|
Swimming |
10 minutes per mile |
Question:
Julie recently participated in a mini-triatholon.
She did each section perfectly to her average workout times.
If she ran 10 miles, biked 25 miles, and swam 10 miles,
what was her total time IN HOURS and MINUTES?
Explain your answer.
Think:
Running : 8 minutes per mile x 10 mi. in the race
= 80 minutes
Biking : 3 min. per mile x 25 mi. in the race = 75 minutes
Swimming : 10 min. per mile x 10 miles = 100 minutes
80 + 75 + 100 = 255 minutes
Then 255 minutes DIVIDED by 60 minutes in every hour
255 ÷ 60 = 4 hours and 15 minutes
Check: (60 x 4 = 240, + 15 = 255)
Answer:
Julie completed her mini-triathalon
in 4 hours and 15 minutes,
because she ran in 80 minutes,
biked in 75 minutes,
and swam in 100 minutes
which totaled 255 minutes.
255 minutes converts to 4 hours and 15 minutes
when you divide 255 by 60 minutes in every hour.
