Area is the number of square units needed to cover a flat surface.

You need to estimate to find the area of a circle. You can count the squares to find the area of a circle.

1 square unit

Find the Area of a circle by counting the number of squares or parts of squares within the circle on the grid. First count the whole squares, then the half squares, and less than half squares. Add all the units and estimate to find the area of the circle.

Example 1

8 whole squares + 4 almost whole squares + 4 about half squares + about 1 more

4 half squares = 2 whole squares

8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = about 15 square units

Example 2

4 whole squares + 2 about half squares + about 1 more

2 half squares = 1 whole squares

4 + 1 + 1 = about 6 square units
