Collect and Analyze Data

A survey provides information about a particular population based on data collected from a sample of that population.

Before data can be displayed, it must be organized. Tallies, frequency charts, and graphs are three ways to organize data.

Tally marks are used to organize large sets of data. Each tally mark indicates one time that the value appears in the data. If a value appears 5 times, the fifth tally mark is drawn as a slash to indicate a group of 5.

A frequency chart can help you list the data quickly. Each value that appears in the data is followed by the number of times it appeared.

Example 1:
Use the data to make a frequency chart. For each car, how many colors were there?

The students in Mrs. Carroll's class surveyed the school parking lot and made a frequency chart to compare the data.

Cars in the School Parking Lot
Color Number
Silver 15
Blue 7
White 6
Black 10
Red 5

Color alphabetically Make a tally mark for each data item. Count tally marks to
find the frequency.
Color

Tally Marks

Frequency
Black    10
Blue       7
Red 5
Silver       15
White    6

The data was organized in a table  making it easier to read and interpret. The data from the table can be used to create the following graph.

A bar graph is a graph that uses bars to show data.

Example 2:

Students read a magazine poll on favorite sports for boys. The article surveyed fifty 4th graders and asked them what was their favorite sport. The data was organized in the table below.

Favorite Sport

Football 12
Baseball 6
Hockey 15
Soccer 8
Basketball 9

The data from the table was used to create a bar graph. A bar graph uses bars to show data.

Remember: Bar graphs are useful in making comparisons. The greatest and least quantities are represented by the longest and shortest bars.
